LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Veterans Day service was memorable event
Despite the rain, it was one of the most memorable Veterans Day events ever in St. Charles. Approximately 300 veterans and their fellow citizens attended the commemoration of the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" Armistice day, British Remembrance Day, now Veterans Day.
A thank you to St. Charles Mayor Patti York and St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann, who presented the city's newly minted Veterans Memorial pins to all veterans in attendance.
Kudos also to our emcee, World War II Navy veteran Clara Scott, and our featured speaker, World War II Marine Corps veteran Bill Rupp, who upon hearing the first roar of thunder quickly altered his address to avoid the coming downpour.
However, come it did, and that's when I discovered that this beautiful town of ours has a real treasure, the St. Charles Municipal Band. Undeterred by the rain and while the crowd dispersed from the shower to the protection of the pavilion, the band played on and finished their patriotic music. They received a hearty, rousing cheer from the assembled vets.
And to top that, after the presenting of the pins to the vets in the pavilion, a rain soaked band trumpeter, Paul Chilson, closed the ceremony after American Legion Post 312's rifle salute (they managed to keep their powder dry) with an absolutely beautiful playing of taps.
It was a beautiful day despite or maybe because of the rain. Thank you, and a special "well done" to the St. Charles Municipal Band.
